Jack A. Frost began his professional career in vertical turbine pumps in 1971 in the engineering department of a pump manufacture while pursuing a mechanical engineering degree at UCLA.

In the late 1970's the wisdom of using pumps for geothermal energy production remained in question. The original Line Shaft downhole pumps at Magma Power's Imperial Valley site repeatedly failed at anywhere from start-up to 30 rotating days. (Modified oil field electric submersible pumps failed even more frequently with little real reliability or commercial improvement. Other novel approaches such as downhole steam turbines were tried, but fared no better).

In 1980, Jack left the corporate arena in favor of the fledging geothermal market that sparked his passion. He began by modifying the original manufacturer's pumps at Magma Power's Imperial Valley site …the first and only binary geothermal plant in the world at the time. His first attempt increased pump life from 0-30 days to 420 days. Jack continued to learn all he could about drilling, well completions and reservoirs from early geothermal pioneers and eventually developed his own line of pumps. The success of the geothermal industry, particularly in the binary range below 400 F, owes a great deal to this early success of these down hole pumps and to the tenacity of Jack Frost. Jack passed away in 2017 following an extended battle with cancer, but we continue to benefit from and build upon his extensive knowledge of geothermal pumps.
